Now this was BETA to the Max!
Not like today’s Beta, which is typically pretty good, this Beta was expensive as hell. When these things came out they listed for $1,300.00 which is like $4,600.00 in 2010. Who’d pay $4,600 for a tape cartridge that only recorded up to 90 minutes of video? Ummmm….a lot of people….like around 30,000.
One of the ways to get noticed in the social sphere and drive traffic to your site is to have “LATE BREAKING NEWS”. The latest gadgets, bleeding edge tech, “Leaked” this or that. But with a constant diet of the latest, or not yet out, we forget what had to happen for us to get there in the first place.
How many people realize that the Internet’s roots go back to the 1950’s as a super secret military project run by DARPA? Or that the first “Cellular Phone” dates back to the 1940’s and the Soviets (remember them) had a better working version that the U.S.?
